Mastering Vinyl Decal & Sunstrip Application: Tips & Tricks

Custom vinyl decals and sunstrips are the perfect way to personalise your vehicle, giving it a unique and eye-catching appearance. Whether you're looking to showcase your individual style or promote your brand, vinyl decals and sunstrips offer endless possibilities. In this guide, we'll explore different ways to apply custom vinyl decals and sunstrips, transforming your vehicle into a rolling work of art.

1. Gather Your Materials:

Before diving into the application process, ensure you have the following materials ready:

  • Custom vinyl decals or sunstrips
  • A squeegee or credit card
  • A clean, lint-free cloth
  • A measuring tape
  • Soapy water solution (a few drops of dish soap in water)
  • A clean, dust-free workspace

2. Clean the Surface:

Clean the area where you plan to apply the decal or sunstrip thoroughly. Any dirt, dust, or residue can affect adhesion. Use a lint-free cloth and a mixture of soapy water to ensure the surface is spotless. Please note, ceramic coatings and waxes need to be removed prior to application.

3. Measure and Mark:

Measure and mark the area where you want to apply the decal or sunstrip. Use a measuring tape to ensure accuracy. Sunstrip Top Tip - Measure the middle of the sunstrip and mark with masking tape. Repeat this on your windscreen, and use both centre points to ensure its aligned centrally.

4. Prepare Your Decals:

Flip the decal over so the paper backing is visual. Carefully peel the backing paper at a 45º angle, leaving the vinyl it attached to the clear application tape. Be cautious not to touch the adhesive with your fingers, as oils can affect adhesion.

5. Apply Soapy Water (Recommended for sunstrips only) :

Spray a fine mist of the soapy water solution onto the surface where you'll be applying the decals. This acts as a lubricant, allowing you to reposition the decals if needed. You can also spray the back of the sunstrip as well.

6. Position and Apply:

Place the decal or sunstrip onto the desired surface. The soapy water will help you position it correctly. Use your squeegee or credit card to press the decal from the center outwards, removing any air bubbles as you go.

7. Smooth It Out:

Gently smooth the decal or sunstrip with the squeegee, ensuring it adheres uniformly to the surface. If you encounter air bubbles, these can be smoothed over with your finger - if they persist, a small pin can be used to relieve the trapped air.

9. Allow to Dry:

Leave the decal or sunstrip to dry for at least 24 hours before exposing them to harsh weather conditions or car washes. Ensure all moisture is removed from underneath the sunstrip prior to driving as this can cause it to lift.
