Back in the early 1970s in Goleta, California, a surfer named Frederick Charles Herzog III — better known as Mr. Zog — was shaping boards and running a local surf shop. He teamed up with Nate Skinner, a chemist working nearby, and the two began developing a superior surfboard wax through good old-fashioned trial and error.

After a year of testing formulas in real surfing conditions, they landed on the perfect blend: a wax that provided excellent grip without being overly sticky. Thus, Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax was born.

🎨 A Bold Name That Stuck

When it came to branding, Mr. Zog turned to artist Hank Pitcher for help designing a label. Pitcher’s suggestion? “Sex Wax.” It was daring, edgy, and memorable — everything a good brand name should be. While some shops initially hesitated to stock it due to the cheeky name, it quickly became a cult classic among surfers thanks to its performance and unmistakable style.

🌍 A Local Legend Goes Global

From humble beginnings in a tiny garage, Zog and Skinner’s operation quickly gained traction. Using makeshift tools like soup tins for moulds and a 50-gallon drum for melting, they handcrafted each bar of wax themselves.

Eventually, they moved into a proper facility in Carpinteria, California, not far from the famous Rincon surf break. Over time, the brand expanded its range to include clothing, candles, and of course — car air fresheners that capture the laid-back, sun-soaked spirit of the surf lifestyle.
